Introduction

• Home • Origins of the Name Thompson •

It has been said that to undertake a One Name Study for the Thompson Family, you need to be either exceedingly brave or a dedicated idiot. I believe that I am very firmly the latter!

A true One Name Study implies that all persons with that name will be recorded eventually. Whereas that may be possible with less common names, with a name like Thompson, it is quite impracticable and therefore I depend a great deal on the assistance of others with like mind to gradually piece the Thompson family together.

This study covers all forms of Thompson including Tomson, Tompson, Thomson as well as Thomason, Tamson, Tamsyn, although the latter are comparatively rare. The origins of the name are common.

The purpose of these pages is to provide access, for those researching their family history, to information on possible Thompson connections.

I must emphasise that the majority of information that I have collected relates to the North East of England although I do have IGI records for Devonshire which are now available from this Web site. At present, I have about 20,000 records.
